It also has many fierce enemies that the player can fight against. Stronghold combines elements of RTS games and building games like Sim City. There is also a second installment to the series, Stronghold: Crusader, released in September of 2002. This rehash took place in the Middle East, featured more finely tuned gameplay, and increased the RTS elements. A second version of the game, Stronghold 2, was released in 2005.

Gameplay

In Stronghold, players take the role of the lord of a kingdom or other high-ranking official. The goal is to create a stable economy and a strong military to defend against invaders and destroy enemy castles. Peasants, the backbone of any castle, must be kept happy; this is achieved by maintaining food in the granary, imposing low or no taxes (or even bribes), providing entertainment, and many other things.

To defend the kingdom, players must build a castle by strategically constructing physical defenses such as walls and towers. Usually, because of limited stone resources, players must also choose which buildings are necessary to place inside the castle walls, and which buildings are expendable.

Military units are created by first constructing the necessary building to create the unit's weapons. For example, to create an archer, a player must first create a fletcher's workshop, which a peasant will then go work for. The peasant will gather wood from the supply pile, create it into a bow or crossbow, and then will deliver it to the armory.

Most things in Stronghold work like a complex process. One example is the boiling oil process. First you need oil rigs to gather oil or otherwise known as pitch. Peasents will gather the oil of the oil rigs and put jars of pitch in your stockpile. An engineer, a type of military unit, will take the jars of pitch and pour it into a smelting oil cauldron. Other engineers can take oil from the smelting oil cauldron and gather it in bowls. With the bowls of boiling oil, they can now drop boiling oil on the heads of the attackers in times of war and siege!

If the player has any spare peasants, he can then create an archer in the barracks. To have a renewable wood source, the player must also create a wood hut (usually several), and to keep the peasants happy (and alive) there must be some sort of food source such a dairy farm. This may seem like a complex process, but once all the buildings are constructed, every unit does its job automatically, minus archers being automatically created.

This game (and to a lesser extent, its expansion pack Stronghold: Crusader) received generally favorable reviews.

The story

Stronghold takes place in a medieval kingdom. The exact time and place are not stated, but a map showing the progression of the story is obviously that of England and Wales. The story of the Campaign begins when the King attempts to invade a barbarian enemy. The invasion fails and the King is captured and held for ransom. Almost immediately, four powerful lords begin to cut the kingdom into their own personal territories. The player is represented as a young, inexperienced commander, whose father is killed in an ambush en route to propose peace with the enemy. Only two lords remain loyal to the King, and the player is in their service.
